Sling Schott Studio is the culmination of an education in photography, 20 years of furniture design, and an ongoing desire to make art.

My Path

I began studying art at the University of Houston with a focus on photography.  During that time I realized that while I loved making photographs, I needed to get my hands dirty.  This need for a more tactile medium took me towards sculpture, and then more specifically furniture design and construction. At this point, I became fully committed to the company designing and building custom furniture and architectural pieces.  It is here that I began the steel painting series of work, which I am currently exploring and developing new materials and techniques.  The encaustic work is a natural fit between traditional oil painting and the steel paintings.  Encaustic also allows to work with fire, and really, who doesn't like working with fire?
